VIRTUAL HERBALISM CONFERENCE - DAY 3

Learning Herbs Across Climates and Cultures with Abril Donea

Join herbalist and educator Abril Donea, founder of the BIPOC Herbalism Community and Conference, as she invites us into a rich exploration of global herbal traditions, bioregional learning, and the cultural roots of plant wisdom. Drawing from her travels and teachings, Abril shares how traditional practices live across landscapes and how we can cultivate an herbal practice grounded in respect and curiosity.

Discussion Highlights:

  • Practices used to cultivate a relationship with the land while traveling
  • How climate and geography influence the way herbal traditions evolve
  • Honoring ecological limits of one’s bioregion while learning from global traditions
  • Distinguishing learning from another culture versus appropriating it
  • Examples of diaspora communities preserving plant traditions in new lands

Abril Donea is a passionate farmer, herbalist, and educator, who travels the world exploring ancestral herbal medicine through the lens of herbal anthropology. She connects with Indigenous healers worldwide to learn, preserve, and share sacred herbal knowledge. As the visionary behind Beauty Herbs & Tea, Abril offers retreats and courses on herbal medicine, herbal teas, and starting herb-based businesses. Abril’s passion for community and accessibility inspired her to create the BIPOC Herbalism Conference, an annual event that celebrates the wisdom of BIPOC herbalists and Indigenous medicine from over 15 countries. She founded the BIPOC Community School to provide affordable, accessible education in Indigenous medicine. On her 87-acre farm in Georgia, Abril hosts in-person retreats, cultivating spaces for sustainability and ancestral knowledge. Through her work, she uplifts Indigenous medicine, promotes holistic well-being, and inspires self-sustainability and cultural connection.
