VIRTUAL HERBALISM CONFERENCE - DAY 4
Everyday Herbalism for Families From Tummy Aches to Big Feelings with Jane Metzger, Lisa Olson, and Meagan Visser
This panel explores how herbalism becomes part of daily life for ourselves and our families. We’ll share gentle, practical ways herbs can support digestion, immunity, sleep, emotional balance, and help navigate the “big feelings” of children and adults alike. Jane Metzger, Lisa Olson, and Meagan Visser—three experienced herbalists—bring their insights, approaches, and personal experiences, offering guidance on weaving plant wisdom into everyday routines for health, connection, and family well-being.
Discussion Highlights:
- Family-friendly herbal rituals that kids enjoy participating in
- Handling common home ailments while knowing when to seek medical care
- Go-to digestive herbs for upset tummies and strategies for choosing among them
- Herbal preparations children are most likely to accept at different ages
- Taste-training strategies for picky young herbalists
- Safe dosing approaches for children
- Supporting children’s nervous systems during “big feelings” with herbs and complementary practices
- Preparing for cold and flu season, including essential herbal staples to stock in advance
Jane Metzger’s love for plants began on her family’s farm in northern Michigan, foraging wild spearmint and elderberries. At 18, she discovered herbalism while working at an herb shop. She balanced herbal studies with a career in geosciences, earning a BS and MS. in the field. After moving to Massachusetts, she started an herbal products business and completed herbalism apprenticeship through Gaia School of Healing in Vermont. In 2014, Jane joined the Herbal Academy and now serves as Co-Director as well as Director of Education, overseeing course development and helping others nurture their well-being.
