VIRTUAL HERBALISM CONFERENCE - DAY 4
Herbal Folklore and Fairytales with Ruthie Kølle
In this session, we join Ruthie Kølle of Mother Hylde, herbalist, storyteller, and keeper of hedgerow wisdom, for an enchanting conversation on herbal folklore and fairytales. Explore how folklore and story have always taught humans about the world, guiding our relationship with plants. Discover herbs steeped in mythic tradition, the medicine they carry, and the stories that reveal their character. Ruthie weaves herbal knowledge, folklore, and fairytales to reconnect us with wonder, belonging, and the living world around us.
Discussion Highlights:
- History of human-plant relationships in folklore and fairytales
- Weaving folklore into writing, teaching, practice, and connection with plants
- Reconnecting with story-based learning to cultivate relational understanding of plants
- Hawthorn as a threshold guardian, its folklore, qualities, and medicinal teachings
- Elder’s mythic identity, elder Mother stories, and lessons about healing and the unseen
- Meadowsweet, St. John’s wort, and nettle through folklore and their symbolic insights
- Emergent themes across these plant stories and what they reveal about plant-human relationships
- Using folklore as a bridge to deepen connection with plants for herbalists and nature lovers
Ruthie Kølle lives in a cabin situated on the northern hem of her family’s 9th generation farm, which occupies unceded Lenape land. She is deeply rooted to her place there and has apprenticed herself to reconnecting to her own Celtic ancestral ways, weaving them into the stories of the land where she is currently planted.
It’s her passion to reconnect with and integrate these traditional and ritual methods of healing into our modern lives. Ruthie has been studying folk and clinical herbalism since 2012, practicing intuitive bodywork since 2005, and creating ceramic art for 30 years.
