VIRTUAL HERBALISM CONFERENCE - DAY 5

The Menopause Transition: A Clinical Herbal Perspective with Pamela Spence, Selima Harleston Lust, and Shona Richter MacDougall

In this panel discussion, we’ll explore menopause—a life stage of transition with nuance, respect, and clinical clarity. Our three experts, Pamela Spence, Selima Harleston Lust, and Shona Richter MacDougall, share experience from client work and education to unpack the physiology, patterns, challenges, and opportunities of this period. We’ll highlight herbal allies for meaningful support, discuss clinical considerations, and explore ways to use herbs to nourish the whole system through this profound and transformative time.

Discussion Highlights:

  • Overview of hormonal changes and common symptoms during menopause
  • Reframing menopause as a natural transition rather than a condition to fix
  • Use of phytoestrogenic herbs to support hormonal balance
  • Herbal approaches to hot flashes mood swings and stress regulation
  • Supporting cognitive changes and sleep disturbances with herbs
  • Supporting bone, joint, and overall physical resilience with herbs, nutrition, and movement
  • Navigating HRT, bioidentical hormones, and integrative perspectives

Pamela Spence’s fascination with herbs began in Singapore’s fragrant markets. After a film career, she studied herbal medicine in 2002 and has since run a clinical practice, taught globally, and written extensively. She helped establish the Betonica School of Herbal Medicine, is Lead Herbalist Educator at the Herbal Academy, and has been Twinings’ Herbal Expert since 2016, advising on product development and supporting herbal start-ups worldwide.
